Sympathies for Leonora & Filipina: Performing the Filipino American Archive [BETA]
for Leonora Perez, for Filipina Narciso, for our families, for you/me/us
HISTORY IS MESSY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO MUST LIVE IT.
– Michel-Rolph Trouillot, Silencing the Past (2005)
Sympathies for Leonora & Filipina: Performing the Filipino American Archive is an ongoing archiving & performance project that explores the story of two Filipina nurses who in 1976 were framed by the FBI for poisoning, conspiracy & murder. One of the nurses, Leonora Perez, happens to be my mother. In this project, I intend to post & meditate on 10+ years of literary & performance works that I’ve written, performed & used to help me & our communities better understand this moment in Filipino American history. Along the way, I promise to take mad detours, perform some remixes & make new archives. This is my life’s work. For the time being, please peep the BETA VERSION of what will eventually develop into an ongoing trans-media relationship between me, this history & you.
